§ 20-23. Functions.

  • The fire department, in accordance with and subject to the law and ordinances shall:

    (1)

    Protect life and property from fire and explosion hazards by prevention and suppression;

    (2)

    Inspect property and places for fire and life safety hazards;

    (3)

    Enforce the law and ordinances relating to fire, explosion, and life safety;

    (4)

    Respond and take charge of hazardous material releases; confined space rescues, trench rescues, swift water rescues, and high angle rescues, and any other rescue situations in order to protect life and property;

    (5)

    Respond to any acts of terrorism and assist the police department in a subordinate role with all available resources, if necessary;

    (6)

    Provide medical response ambulance and rescue services to emergency and nonemergency calls.
